Virgil Herd Petit, An American Revolutionary War Soldier Virgil S Herd C J Petit

Despite his unwavering dedication and remarkable accomplishments, Virgil Herd Petit remains an unsung hero of the American Revolution. His story deserves to be told and celebrated, not only for its historical significance but also for the inspiration it can provide to us today.

Early Life and Education

Virgil Herd Petit was born in 1750 in Hebron, Connecticut. His parents were devout Puritans who instilled in him a strong sense of morality and patriotism. From an early age, Petit displayed an exceptional intellect and a passion for knowledge. He attended Yale College, where he excelled in his studies and graduated with honors in 1772.

Military Service

When the American Revolution broke out in 1775, Petit eagerly joined the Continental Army. He was commissioned as a captain in the 15th Connecticut Regiment, under the command of Colonel Samuel Holden Parsons. Petit's military skills and leadership qualities quickly became apparent. He fought bravely in numerous battles, including the Battle of Bunker Hill, the Battle of White Plains, and the Battle of Monmouth.

In 1777, Petit was promoted to major and placed in command of his own regiment. He played a key role in the Battle of Saratoga, one of the turning points of the war. Petit's regiment helped to surround the British army, leading to their eventual surrender.

Petit continued to serve with distinction throughout the war. He was wounded several times, but his unwavering determination kept him fighting. In 1781, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and commanded a brigade of Connecticut troops at the Battle of Yorktown, the final major battle of the war.

Post-War Life

After the war, Petit returned to civilian life. He married and had a family, and he became a successful businessman and politician. He served in the Connecticut General Assembly and represented his state in the United States Congress.

Petit remained active in military affairs. He was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati, an organization of former Continental Army officers. He also helped to establish the Connecticut National Guard.

Legacy

Virgil Herd Petit died on December 26, 1822, at the age of 72. He was buried in Hebron, Connecticut, where he had been born and raised.

Although his name may not be as well-known as some other heroes of the American Revolution, Petit's contributions were no less significant. His courage, determination, and leadership helped to secure the independence of the United States.

We should remember Virgil Herd Petit as a true American hero. His story is one that should inspire us all to be brave, to stand up for what we believe in, and to never give up on our dreams.
