Uniportal Single Port Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery: An Issue of Thoracic
Uniportal video-assisted thoracic surgery (uniportal VATS) is a minimally invasive surgical technique that allows surgeons to perform thoracic operations through a single small incision. This technique has many advantages over traditional open surgery, including reduced pain, scarring, and recovery time. Uniportal VATS is also associated with a lower risk of complications.
The first uniportal VATS procedure was performed in 1998 by Dr. Diego Gonzalez Rivas in Spain. Since then, the technique has gained popularity around the world. In 2011, the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS) published guidelines for the use of uniportal VATS.
Uniportal VATS can be used to treat a variety of thoracic conditions, including:

Uniportal VATS is performed through a single small incision, typically made in the腋窝(armpit). The surgeon then inserts a camera and surgical instruments into the incision. The camera provides the surgeon with a clear view of the thoracic cavity. The surgical instruments are used to perform the operation.
Uniportal VATS offers a number of benefits over traditional open surgery, including:
- Reduced pain: Uniportal VATS is less painful than open surgery because it involves only a small incision.
- Reduced scarring: Uniportal VATS leaves only a small scar, which is typically hidden in the腋窝.
- Shorter recovery time: Uniportal VATS patients typically recover faster than open surgery patients. Most patients are able to go home from the hospital within 1-2 days.
- Lower risk of complications: Uniportal VATS is associated with a lower risk of complications than open surgery. This is because the technique is less invasive and involves less tissue damage.
Uniportal VATS is a safe procedure, but it does have some risks. These risks include:
- Bleeding: Bleeding is a rare but potential complication of any surgery.
- Infection: Infection is also a rare but potential complication of any surgery.
- Damage to nerves or blood vessels: Damage to nerves or blood vessels is a very rare but potential complication of uniportal VATS.
- Conversion to open surgery: In some cases, it may be necessary to convert uniportal VATS to open surgery. This is typically done if the surgeon encounters unexpected difficulties during the procedure.
Uniportal VATS is a minimally invasive surgical technique that offers a number of benefits over traditional open surgery. The technique is safe and effective, and it is associated with a lower risk of complications. Uniportal VATS is a good option for patients who need thoracic surgery and who want to minimize pain, scarring, and recovery time.
