About the Author
Charles Lewis Baron de Pollnitz (1692-1760) was a German nobleman and diplomat. He traveled extensively throughout Europe in the early 18th century, and his Memoirs provide a valuable account of the political, social, and cultural life of the continent during that time.
Pollnitz was born in Cologne, Germany, in 1692. He studied law at the University of Halle, and then entered the diplomatic service of the Elector of Hanover. In 1715, he was appointed as the Hanoverian envoy to the court of Prussia.
Pollnitz served as the Hanoverian envoy to Prussia for seven years. During that time, he became well acquainted with Frederick the Great, the future king of Prussia. Pollnitz was a keen observer of Prussian society, and his Memoirs provide valuable insights into the rise of Prussia under Frederick the Great.
In 1722, Pollnitz was recalled to Hanover. He continued to serve as a diplomat for the Elector of Hanover, but he also began to write his Memoirs. The first volume of his Memoirs was published in French in 1734, and the English translation was published in 1737.
