Jonathan Kinkaid: The Long and Winding Journey of an Inland Fleet Goaltender

Jonathan Kinkaid's journey to the NHL was anything but ordinary. The 6'3", 190-pound goaltender from Farmingville, New York, spent his early years playing for the New York Bobcats of the Eastern Junior Hockey League (EJHL). After two seasons with the Bobcats, Kinkaid moved on to play for the Springfield Jr. Blues of the North American Hockey League (NAHL). In his lone season with the Jr. Blues, Kinkaid posted a 2.25 goals-against average (GAA) and a .925 save percentage, helping the team win the NAHL championship.

Despite his success in the NAHL, Kinkaid went undrafted by an NHL team. He eventually earned a scholarship to Union College in Schenectady, New York, where he played for the Dutchmen in the ECAC Hockey conference. In his four seasons with Union, Kinkaid established himself as one of the top goaltenders in college hockey. He was a two-time All-ECAC Hockey selection and was named the ECAC Hockey Player of the Year in his senior season. Kinkaid also helped Union win the ECAC Hockey championship in 2012.

After graduating from Union, Kinkaid signed a two-way contract with the New Jersey Devils. He spent the majority of the 2013-14 season playing for the Devils' AHL affiliate, the Albany Devils. Kinkaid made his NHL debut for the Devils on March 15, 2014, and appeared in two more games for the team that season.

The following season, Kinkaid became the Devils' primary backup goaltender behind Cory Schneider. He appeared in 26 games for the Devils and posted a 2.21 GAA and a .920 save percentage. Kinkaid also made his first NHL playoff appearance in the 2015 playoffs, appearing in three games.

In the 2016-17 season, Kinkaid became the Devils' starting goaltender after Schneider was injured. He appeared in 53 games for the Devils and posted a 2.78 GAA and a .911 save percentage. Kinkaid also helped the Devils reach the playoffs, where they were eliminated in the first round by the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Kinkaid remained the Devils' starting goaltender for the next two seasons. He appeared in 55 games in the 2017-18 season and posted a 3.15 GAA and a .902 save percentage. In the 2018-19 season, Kinkaid appeared in 50 games and posted a 3.63 GAA and a .896 save percentage.
