A Childhood Shattered by War
Eva Kor was born in Porț, Romania, on January 31, 1934, into a loving Jewish family. Her idyllic childhood came to an abrupt end when Nazi Germany invaded her homeland in 1944. Her family was forced into a ghetto and later deported to the infamous Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp, where they were separated upon arrival.
Medical Experiments and Near-Death Experiences
At Auschwitz, Eva and her twin sister Miriam became subjects of Dr. Josef Mengele's cruel and inhumane medical experiments. They endured countless injections, blood tests, and other torturous procedures aimed at studying the effects of genetics and twinship. Eva recalled witnessing the horrors inflicted upon other prisoners, including forced sterilizations, amputations, and even murder.
Despite the unimaginable suffering, Eva and Miriam clung to each other and found solace in their shared pain. They devised a secret language to communicate and sang songs to uplift their spirits. Their indomitable will and unwavering bond helped them endure the unspeakable atrocities.
Liberation and a New Beginning
In January 1945, the Soviet army liberated Auschwitz. Eva and Miriam were among the few survivors who emerged from the horrors of the camp. Their frail bodies and scarred minds bore the weight of the unimaginable trauma they had endured.
After the war, Eva and Miriam emigrated to Israel, where they struggled to rebuild their shattered lives. Eva married a fellow Holocaust survivor, Michael Kor, and together they raised two children.
Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Despite the horrors she had witnessed, Eva chose the path of forgiveness. She believed that holding on to anger and hatred would only perpetuate the cycle of violence. Instead, she dedicated her life to promoting reconciliation and peace.
In 1985, Eva founded CANDLES (Children of Auschwitz Nazi Deadly Lab Experiments Survivors),an organization that provides support and resources for Holocaust survivors. She tirelessly traveled the world, sharing her story and advocating for human rights.
Eva Kor's Legacy
Eva Kor passed away in 2019, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, forgiveness, and the importance of education. Her story serves as a stark reminder of the horrors of the Holocaust and the indomitable spirit of those who survived.
Through her unwavering advocacy, Eva Kor inspired countless individuals to confront the darkness of the past and strive for a more just and compassionate world. Her life stands as a testament to the power of human resilience and the transformative impact of forgiveness.
As we remember the victims of the Holocaust, let us honor their memory by embracing the values that Eva Kor embodied: compassion, empathy, and the unwavering belief in the human spirit's ability to triumph over adversity.
