Reading is a foundational skill that is essential for academic success and future life outcomes. Unfortunately, many students struggle with reading, particularly in the early grades. Early reading difficulties can have a snowball effect, leading to further academic challenges and a diminished love of reading. Therefore, it is imperative that schools provide students with the support they need to become proficient readers.

Intensive reading interventions are designed to provide additional support to students who are struggling with reading. These interventions typically involve small-group or one-on-one instruction that is tailored to the individual needs of the student. Intensive reading interventions have been shown to be effective in improving reading skills, particularly for students in the early grades.

The Guilford Framework

The Guilford Framework is a comprehensive framework for providing intensive reading interventions in the elementary grades. The framework was developed by researchers at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and is based on the latest research on reading instruction.

The Guilford Framework has three main components:

  1. Assessment: The first step in providing an intensive reading intervention is to assess the student's reading skills. This assessment should include measures of the student's phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
  2. Intervention: The second step is to develop an intervention plan that is tailored to the student's individual needs. The intervention plan should include specific goals and objectives, as well as the instructional strategies that will be used to achieve those goals.
  3. Monitoring: The third step is to monitor the student's progress and make adjustments to the intervention plan as needed. Progress monitoring should be conducted on a regular basis to ensure that the student is making progress towards their goals.

Intensive Reading Interventions in the Elementary Grades

There are a variety of intensive reading interventions that can be used in the elementary grades. These interventions can be grouped into three main categories: phonemic awareness interventions, phonics interventions, and fluency interventions.

Phonemic awareness interventions focus on developing the student's awareness of the sounds in words. Phonemic awareness is a critical skill for reading, as it allows students to segment words into their individual sounds and blend sounds together to form words.

Phonics interventions focus on teaching students the relationship between letters and sounds. Phonics instruction is essential for students to learn to decode words, which is the process of sounding out words.

Fluency interventions focus on developing the student's reading speed and accuracy. Fluency is important for reading comprehension, as it allows students to read text quickly and smoothly, without having to decode every word.

The Importance of Early Intervention

Early intervention is essential for students who are struggling with reading. The earlier that students receive intervention, the more likely they are to catch up to their peers and avoid future academic difficulties.

If you are concerned about your child's reading skills, talk to your child's teacher. The teacher can assess your child's reading skills and recommend an appropriate intervention.

Intensive reading interventions can be an effective way to help students who are struggling with reading. The Guilford Framework provides a comprehensive approach to providing intensive reading interventions in the elementary grades. By following the steps in the framework, schools can ensure that students receive the support they need to become proficient readers.
