The Soaring Eagles were founded in 2019 as part of the XFL's relaunch. The team is owned by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Dany Garcia, who also own the XFL. The Soaring Eagles are the first professional football team to be based in Washington, D.C. since the Washington Redskins relocated to Maryland in 1997.
The Soaring Eagles played their first game in February 2020, losing to the Seattle Dragons 31-19. The team finished the season with a 3-5 record, good for third place in the East Division.
